Hello! As you know, my name is Tom Targa. And like other names, mine has a special meaning. Read on quickly! Then you’ll find out what the term ‘Targa’ stands for at Porsche. And also why my name is Targa. It’s a really interesting story.

At Porsche, since 1965 Targa has been a designation for a type of convertible, which means an open car. The special features are the glass roof and the famous Targa bar. It makes the Porsche safe in accidents. Today, the 911 Targa also has such a bar and a glass window at the back. In the past, it was hinged and made of plastic.

The first Porsche 911 Targa was named after the ‘Targa Florio’. That was the name of an exciting car race in Sicily, Italy. There were many narrow roads, curves and sunshine. Porsche was always very successful in these long races and often won. So the name fits Porsche perfectly.

But why am I now also called Targa? That’s actually quite simple! I love Italy and today, as a test driver for Porsche, I still often drive the route of the famous ‘Targa Florio’. I’m also open-minded, safety-conscious and have a sunny disposition. So I’m usually in a good mood. What does your name mean?

Anyway, now you know the story behind my name. Cool, huh? Next week Tina Turbo will tell you more about her name ‘Turbo’. See you then!

Yours, Tom

Did you know?
Targa means ‘shield’ in Italian, also ‘nameplate’. By the way, your own name is the most beautiful and important word in any language.
